A cruisaders motives: Twilight

Thu Jul 2, 2009, 11:47 AM
As a few people (namely the ones reading my stuff) could have guessed, I have a bit of a beef with the Twilight franchise. As a person, beliefing in causality, I will now explain why I see the books, the movies and especially the success of both as a tragic event.
Reason 1.: Durrrrr..
I can deal with stupid characters. But even those need to be characters in the first place. Sadly we dont get those in Twilight. Instead we get page after page of Bella telling us how awesome and stunnging and beautiful and beautiful and beautiful Eddy is. The frikking protagonist has no interests but her boyfriend and that guy has no interests either. Those two stare at each others for pages (minutes in the movie) and nothing happens. In the movie, the director tries her best to mask that, by spinning the camera around like crazy (FAIL). I wont even go into detail with the others... lets just say that there is no characters and basically no development to speak of.
Reason 2.: SPECIAL!
"I am Bella Swan and I am plain and clumsy!"
This basic message gets repeaded again and again in the book and the movie, yet every character is basically in love with Bella, no matter what she does. Just to give a summary: She throws people into each other, just to create pairing, so the boys wont annoy her anymore. She ditches her friends on several occations. She flirts information out of others. She looks down on basically everyone around herself, besides the vampires.
SOUNDS LIKE A KEEPER TO ME!
Basically Bella is the most selfish and proposterous being in the whole series, yet EVERYONE likes or loves her or wants only HER blood.
I was kinda hoping those annyoing Mary-Sue characters would never make it into written media.
Reason 3.: No 3rd Newton
Sometimes, even in Twilight, things happen. Only that they NEVER leave any impact on the characters or anything. And most of the time they just happen in order to bring drama or give Eddy and excuse to be creepy as heck. I could include this point with the no-character development, but this is so bad, it deserves an extra mention.
Reason 4.: Established and forgotten
"I can hardly controll myself!"
Edward says that tired line again and again. Yet he always does. Edward is affraid that the werewolfs might lose control, so he tries to keep Bella away from them. They never lose control. Being a vampire is horrible, because you cant feel anymore. The Cullens are QUITE happy together. Whenever there is something "established" in the book, you can be sure that it wont matter, because the writing is SO inconsequential that things get established, just to be ignored a few pages later. It made me wonder if the author actually read her own work.
Reason 5.: The Fallen
They really did fall deep. Poor Vampires. I can remember when people feared you for your powers, now you glitter in the sunlight. I can remember when you needed humans to watch over your coffin, now you have no weakness to speak of. This might be a personal point, but what Stephenie Meyer did to supernatural beings was just stupid. She removed every part of real drama from them and turned them into some kind of light-version, just with an even worse aftertaste.
Reason 6.: OBEY WOMAN!
THIS IS PERSONAL!
This book puts a young female character in a state of being "incomplete" without a partner. She needs to be with him all the time and turns into a zombie when he is not around. THIS IS A HORRIBLE MESSAGE! I basically establishes that women need a man to optain the status of "person". Femenists have fought and died to give women the rights they have now and this book tells us what extremists are telling us.
And it doesnt stop there... Bellas only wish is to be with Edward, she leaves her friends, her family and everyone esle for that. This is escaping reality into a perfect world. Usually this kind of book is read by housewifes in their late 50s. Now it is a youth book.
It also does never show a man doing housework or a successfull woman. It just denies the last 50 years our culture tried to make women equals. A GREAT LESSON FOR YOUNG GIRLS
Reason 7.: SO BEAUTIFUL
Edward looks at her when she sleeps.
Edward listens to her in her sleep.
Edward doesnt like her going out without him.
Edward follows her around, without her knowing.
Do we need any more examples of stalker-behaviour? This guy is creepy beyond belief and yet he gets worshipped on basically every forum.
Reason 8.: Enough with the sex already
Remember how the original Star Wars was awesome without containing any sex? Maybe it is just a sign of time, but the permanent implying of rape, sex and penetration (Vampire teeth. deep-psychology, thats how it works) is just mind numbing. For a book 12-year old ones read, this is HIGHLY inapropriate.
Reason 9.: DRAMA
All I need to say: GET ME A VIOLIN! *Airviolins around* :shakefist:
Reason 10.: Movie only
This movie had a few REALLY bad things on its own:
-The side characters WERE more interesting than the main cast (I want a Charlie & Chief in weelchair spin-off show).
-Transmissions were SO badly implied that you have NO FRIKKING idea what date it is. You have to have read the book to understand what the heck is going on!

There are actually more, but I think you get a bit of an idea, why the book and the movie were so poor in my eyes.
